Selling a junk car with no keys in Chicago

By Masters Cash for Junk Cars · Published · Last updated

Can you sell a junk car without the keys?

Yes. Masters Cash for Junk Cars buys junk cars with no keys or a lost fob across Chicago and the suburbs. A key only matters for moving the car, and our driver plans the tow around a locked wheel or a car stuck in Park. What you still need is proof that you own the car, plus your ID.

Losing the keys feels like it should kill the sale. For a junk car it barely matters. Nobody is driving the car away, so the key’s two jobs (freeing the steering and letting the transmission out of Park) turn into towing details, and the towing is our end of the deal. We’re based on Chicago’s Southwest Side and pick up all over the city and suburbs, keys or no keys.

Keys aren’t the paperwork

People mix these two up constantly. A key proves you can start the car. It doesn’t prove the car is yours.

Illinois only cares about the second part. Under 625 ILCS 5/5-401.3, a scrap processor buying a car from a private seller has to record two forms of identification, one of them a driver’s license or State ID card. The seller also has to hand over documentary proof of ownership: a certificate of title, a salvage certificate, a junking certificate, a Secretary of State junking manifest, a certificate of purchase or similar proof. Without one, the statute says the processor shall not take the car.

So the order is simple. No keys is fine. No ownership papers is the thing to sort out first. If the title vanished along with the keys (same glovebox, same kitchen drawer), the owner can ask the Secretary of State for a duplicate title, and our guide to junking a car without a title in Illinois covers the other documents. Read out the papers you have when you phone us. Whether they will do for a scrap sale comes down to Illinois rules, and we check that with you on the call at (708) 838-5553. Our no-title junk cars page explains the same thing from our side.

What a missing key changes on pickup day

Without its key, a lot of cars can’t steer or roll. That’s the whole problem, and it’s a planning problem, not a deal breaker.

Your situation What it means for the tow What to tell us
Manual transmission, key lost Usually the simplest case, since a manual can generally be shifted to neutral without a key Whether it’s in gear or neutral
Automatic left in Park The drive wheels won’t turn, so the car has to be lifted and carried, not rolled The gear, and front- or rear-wheel drive if you know
Steering wheel locked The front wheels stay wherever they were pointed Which way the wheels are turned
Push-button car, fob lost The car won’t power up, so an electronic shifter usually stays in Park That it’s keyless, plus the make and model
Electronic parking brake on It generally needs power to release That the brake was set when it was parked
Doors locked, no way in The driver plans the move without getting into the cabin That it’s locked, and whether a window is open

Push-button and fob cars

Keyless cars cause the most confusion. Losing the fob doesn’t just mean you can’t lock the doors. The car won’t switch on at all, and on many models the shifter can’t leave Park without power.

Check two things before you give up on the fob. Many fobs hide a mechanical key blade that opens the driver’s door. And many push-button cars have a backup start method for a weak fob battery, which the owner’s manual describes. If the fob is truly gone, that’s fine too. Just say so.

Stuck in Park, a locked wheel or a car that won’t go into neutral

Some automatics have a shift-lock override, a small slot or button by the shifter that frees the lever while you hold the brake. Your owner’s manual will tell you whether yours has one. Don’t pry at the shifter or wrench the steering wheel to help us out, though. A snapped lock or a bent linkage doesn’t make the car any easier to move, and you can hurt your hand doing it.

A no-key automatic that won’t go into neutral is ordinary. So are flat tires and a dead battery on top of it. What changes the plan is where the car sits. A car wedged into a gangway parking pad in Gage Park or parked behind a detached garage in West Lawn takes more setup than one at the curb, so describe the spot. Our guide to alley, garage and backyard pickups covers how to clear a path ahead of time, and the free junk car towing page explains how the tow itself works.

Don’t pay for a key first

This is the mistake we’d most like to save you from. People call a locksmith or the dealer, pay to have a key cut and programmed, and only then sell the car for scrap. The new key leaves with the car. It also won’t fix the reason the car is junk. If the car doesn’t start anyway, it’s one of the cars that don’t run we buy as they sit.

The one case where a key can matter is when you plan to sell the car as a running car to a private buyer. That’s a different sale, and we don’t buy good running cars for resale.

What to have ready when you call

Call (708) 838-5553 or use the online form, and have this handy:

  1. Year, make and model (we take every make on our makes we buy list)
  2. Whether the keys or fob are missing, and whether the doors are locked
  3. The gear it’s in, if you know, and which way the wheels point
  4. Where it’s parked: street, driveway, alley, garage or yard
  5. Which ownership papers you have, and whose name is on them
  6. Your ID, for the pickup itself

The tow is free, in our own tow truck, and same-day pickup is often possible. You’re paid at pickup, by Zelle, cash or Cash App. Got a second keyless car on the property? We can take several vehicles in one pickup.

More on this

Do I need to get a new key made before you pick up the car?

No. Cutting or programming a key for a car that's headed for scrap means paying for a part that leaves with the car, and it won't fix whatever made the car junk. Tell us on the call that the keys are gone. The driver comes ready to move a car that can't be opened, started or shifted out of Park.

What if I still have the key fob but its battery is dead?

Say so when you call, because a dead fob isn't the same as a lost one. Many fobs hide a small metal key blade that opens the driver's door, and many push-button cars have a backup way to start with a weak fob battery, described in the owner's manual. If neither works, we handle it as a no-key pickup.

Can I sell a car with no keys if the title is in someone else's name?

Not by yourself. Missing keys are fine, but Illinois expects a scrap buyer to get documentary proof of ownership and ID from the person selling the car, so the owner named on the papers has to be part of the sale. Tell us whose name is on the title and we'll explain on the call what Illinois rules allow.
