Stickney is a village of about 7,100 people (2020 Census) on just under 2 square miles in Stickney Township, all in ZIP code 60402. It took its name in 1913 from Alpheus Beede Stickney, the railroad executive who helped build the Clearing Industrial District. Every resident lives west of Ridgeland Avenue. Harlem Avenue (Illinois Route 43) runs through the village and Pershing Road crosses it, and Village Hall and the police station are on Pershing.

Most of Stickney was built after World War II, when there was still vacant land to fill, and it shows. Census Bureau survey data puts about 80 percent of the village’s homes in detached single-family houses, and over 8 in 10 households own their home. That makes most pickups here driveway or garage jobs, often a garage that opens onto an alley.

Ashburn to Stickney

From 79th Street and Pulaski Road, the usual route is about 9 miles and around 17 minutes in normal traffic: one mile west on 79th, north on Cicero Avenue (Illinois Route 50) for about 5 miles, then west on Pershing Road into the village. Once you’re in the village, Harlem Avenue is the road that runs north and south through it.

Who can park on the street between 2 and 6 a.m.

Stickney limits overnight street parking to residents. Under Section 14-161.2 of the village code, only Stickney residents may park on any village street from 2:00 to 6:00 a.m. The police department can give temporary exemptions for guests or short construction jobs. According to the department, those are capped at 3 consecutive days and 10 days a month, and you must request one before 2:00 a.m.

If you’re clearing out a car that belongs to a relative or friend who lives elsewhere, keep that rule in mind and get the car into a driveway, or ask the police for an exemption, until pickup.

Trucks, vans and RVs

The village’s transportation page says trucks of any size and recreational vehicles may not be parked on village streets from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays, or at any time on weekends, and commercial vehicles are barred from midnight to 7 a.m. If the junk vehicle you’re selling is an old pickup or a camper van, it needs to stay in a driveway or garage until we arrive. We buy trucks, vans and SUVs as well as cars.

Alleys and the five-day clock

Two more rules come up often. Section 14-145 bans parking in any alley at any time, with an exception for cars sitting fully on paved private property next to it, and the village also treats driving an alley just as a shortcut between streets as unlawful. Section 14-146 bans parking on a street to show a vehicle for sale, so a “for sale” sign on a dead car at the curb isn’t an option either.

Section 14-272 makes it unlawful to abandon a vehicle on a highway, or to abandon or store an inoperable vehicle on private or public property, unless it’s on the owner’s own property or that of the person keeping it. For a car on a street or other public property, Section 14-274 sets out the process: a posted notice plus certified or registered mail, then, if the car hasn’t moved within 5 consecutive days, it’s deemed abandoned and towed on the sixth. The owner faces a $750 administrative penalty plus towing and storage costs. On someone else’s private property, Section 14-276 lets the police chief order removal after 5 days. The full article is in Stickney’s code on abandoned vehicles.

Snow on Pershing and Harlem

When more than 2 inches of snow falls, Section 14-147 puts odd and even day parking limits in place from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., and over 6 inches bans parking on Pershing Road from midnight to 5 a.m. Cars in the way can be towed or relocated. In a declared snow emergency, alternate-side limits start 8 hours after the declaration, and Pershing Road and Harlem Avenue don’t open up for parking on the opposite side.

Giving directions

Haley Park, built on the site of the old Haley School, is a good marker, as are Home School and Edison School, both part of Lyons Elementary District 103. Pace runs buses on Harlem Avenue, Oak Park Avenue and Austin Boulevard, so “a block off Harlem” plus a cross street is often all a driver needs.

How Masters Cash for Junk Cars handles a Stickney sale

Call (708) 838-5553 (we’re available 24 hours, every day) or send details through the cash offer form. We buy wrecked, burned, flooded, stripped and keyless vehicles, just not good running cars to resell. Towing is free and isn’t subtracted from what we pay.

On paperwork, tell us what you have, such as the title, a registration, a bill of sale or an insurance card. The state of Illinois decides which of those papers can be used to scrap a car, so we go over yours on the call before sending a truck. After the sale, Stickney’s vehicle sticker year runs from July 1 to June 30, and our guide on vehicle stickers after selling a car covers what to do with yours.

Stickney questions

My dead car is on the street in Stickney. How long can it stay there?

On a street or other public property, Stickney's code gives an inoperable or unmoved car a posted notice and a certified or registered letter. If it isn't moved within 5 consecutive days it's treated as abandoned and can be towed on the sixth, with a $750 administrative penalty plus towing and storage. Call us before that clock runs out.

Can a friend's car I'm getting rid of sit on my Stickney street overnight?

Only with police permission. Between 2:00 and 6:00 a.m., village streets are for residents' vehicles only. The police can grant a temporary exemption, limited to 3 nights in a row and 10 nights a month, and you have to ask before 2:00 a.m.

Do you buy old pickup trucks and vans in Stickney?

Yes, junk trucks, vans and SUVs as well as cars. Note that Stickney keeps trucks of any size and RVs off village streets from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays and all weekend, so a dead pickup belongs in a driveway or garage until we come for it.

Can you pick up from a garage off a Stickney alley?

Usually, yes, if the driver can reach the car. Stickney doesn't allow parking in alleys at any time, so tell us which garage it is, the nearest cross streets, and whether the car rolls. We'll plan the pickup around that.
