Getting a tow truck to Brighton Park

From 79th and Pulaski, the run to Brighton Park is about 5.2 miles. The truck goes north on Pulaski Road for roughly 3.6 miles, then bears right onto Archer Avenue and follows that diagonal for another mile and a half or so. Archer is the spine of the neighborhood, so from there it’s a few turns to most addresses.

That route keeps the truck off the expressway, even though the Stevenson (I-55) runs along the north edge of the neighborhood. Call with the car’s details and we’ll tell you whether today is realistic.

The canal, Western Avenue and 49th Street

Brighton Park has clear borders. The Sanitary and Ship Canal, along with the path of the old Illinois and Michigan Canal, forms the north edge. Western Avenue runs along the east, 49th Street marks the south, and Drake Avenue closes the west side.

Inside those lines, houses share space with industry. The Corwith Intermodal Facility, a BNSF freight yard at Pershing Road and Kedzie Avenue, covers nearly a square mile on its own. Near Western and Archer, the Brighton Park crossing is a busy rail junction. Trucking yards and small shops fill a lot of the gaps.

For a pickup, that mix matters. A car parked behind a shop or inside a fenced lot is fine to sell, but the driver has to be able to get in. Someone with a key to the gate, or a manager who knows we’re coming, saves a wasted trip.

Older homes, older garages

Most of the houses here went up between about 1905 and 1925, when streetcar lines reached Western, Kedzie, 35th Street and 47th Street. A garage that old may have a narrow door, and a car parked inside for years can end up with soft tires or boxes stacked in front of it.

Before we come out, take a look at a few things:

  • whether the garage door opens fully, by hand or opener
  • whether the tires hold air or are flat
  • whether anything is blocking the path to the alley or driveway
  • whether the keys are around (they help, but aren’t required)

None of these will stop a sale on its own. They just help the driver show up with a plan. A car that doesn’t run is still a normal pickup.

Registration, the curb and the two-day rule

If your car lives at the curb and the plates have lapsed, keep in mind that the city’s abandoned vehicle criteria cover a car left on the public way without state registration or a temporary placard for two or more days. Those can be reported through 311 and towed to a city pound. Selling first is the better trade. Once it’s sold, our guide on vehicle stickers after selling a car explains what to wrap up with the city.

Landmarks people use here

Archer Avenue is where most directions start, and it grew up as the main street for the neighborhood’s Polish-owned businesses. The Brighton Park branch library is on Archer too. The Chicago Park District runs Brighton Park (the park) on Richmond Street at 35th, and the Park District’s own headquarters is in the neighborhood. On the south side, the Kedzie and Western Orange Line stations sit along the line Brighton Park shares with Gage Park. “Near the Western stop at 49th” tells a driver exactly where to look.

Paperwork and payment

Have whatever papers you’ve got ready: title, bill of sale, registration, or an insurance card. Which of them works for a scrap sale depends on Illinois rules, so we go over it with you on the call rather than guess. Missing the title? Read about selling a junk car without a title first. Payment happens at pickup, in cash or by Zelle or Cash App, and the tow is free. You can start an offer online any time.

Head west past the Corwith yard and you’re in Archer Heights. South of 49th Street, Gage Park takes over. Both are on our list of Southwest Side service areas.

Brighton Park questions

How far is Brighton Park from the middle of your service area?

It's roughly 5 miles from 79th and Pulaski. The truck runs north on Pulaski Road for about three and a half miles, then turns onto Archer Avenue and follows it northeast into the neighborhood. Same-day pickup is often possible, though we can't promise an exact time.

My car's registration expired and it's parked on the street. Is that a problem?

It can be. Chicago's abandoned vehicle rules include a car left on the public way without a valid state registration or temporary placard for two days or more. Selling it to us gets it off the curb, and you keep the payment instead of facing a city tow.

Do you buy vans and pickup trucks in Brighton Park?

Yes. Along with cars, we buy junk trucks, vans and SUVs in any condition, including work vehicles that have been sitting in a yard or lot. If it's parked in a business lot, arrange access with whoever controls the gate before the driver arrives.
